In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat.

Add the chopped onions and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions are translucent.

Add the chopped tomatoes, vegetable broth, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir well.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the tomatoes have softened.

Using an immersion blender or a regular blender, blend the soup until smooth and creamy.
